James Stevens, a member of the Akwesasne Mohawk tribe, has taught at Haskell Indians Nations University for the past five years and recently accepted a position as professor of Native American studies at S.U.N.Y Fredonia. He has published two books of poetry, Tokinish (First Intensity Press, l994), and Combing the Snakes from His Hair (Michigan State University Press, forthcoming fall 2001).
