Hans Ostrom is Distinguished Professor
of English and codirector of African-American studies at the University
of Puget Sound. He is author of A Langston
Hughes Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 2001) and Langston
Hughes: A Study of the Short Fiction (1993). His articles,
poems, and short stories have appeared in a variety of magazines
and journals, and he is author of the novel Three
to Get Ready (1991) and a recent book of poems, Subjects
Apprehended (2000). With Wendy Bishop and Katharine Haake,
he wrote Metro: Journeys in Writing Creatively
